Memorial Day 2013
“Not only are they commemorated by columns and inscriptions, but there dwells also an unwritten memorial of them, graven not on stone but in the hearts of men.” Athenian leader Pericles, 495 – 429 BC
Memorial Day in the United States was established on May 5, 1868 when Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30th. As we can see by the words of Pericles, those who have given the greatest sacrifice for their countries have been honored for millennium.
The past century has been filled with wars where US soldiers have fought on foreign soil. Brave men and women overcome great fear to enter into battle. Regardless of political views or ideas, we are united in respecting those who have fought and those who have died for our country.
Both my husband and me are veterans. We served overseas in South Korea and Germany and lived with the threat of war hanging over our heads in in 80s. The Daytona Beach area is home to thousands of veterans who today honor lost friends and family. We understand the sacrifice that military families make and today we honor those who have served, fallen and continue to serve today.
Thank You.
